Renewable Energy UK projects success points.

The price of energy has reached record levels and continues growing in the UK. How to deal with this problem? One of the solutions may be increasing the amount of renewable energy sources. But valuable parameters of a successful construction industry project are sometimes too hard to predict. What type of technology to choose (solar photovoltaics, offshore wind, biomass etc.)? What type of procurement to choose (a private developer or a large company)? Which region will be the best (Great London, Scotland, Wales etc.)? Perhaps there are other important things which should be taken into account? I tried answering those questions based on analyzing open data provided by the UK government.

There are many statuses in a construction project lifetime. For purposes of this observation I divided all projects to “succeed” (constructed or waiting for construction, approved or in operation phase) and “not succeed” — all other statuses. Based on prediction which parameters are significant for a project success, they were statistically analyzed. This analysis showed that technology type, company, region and project capacity are important for the project success.

Even more, the highest success have projects with small or very large capacity, based on the image above.

Taking into account that huge amount of parameters leads to a decreasing prediction score of the model, I tried to reduce the amount of companies. Due to the fact that many companies provide an insignificant amount of Capacity so the real company name I replaced with “Start Up” value if the total projects were less than three. It allowed me to build a logistic regression model with a high prediction score and also brought interesting results, which will be described in the next part. Analysis of the logistic regression coefficients confirmed significance of parameters mentioned in the preview part and also revealed additional important parameters, such as storage type and possibility to generate heat with electricity.

Introducing the “Start Up” category also provided possibilities for statistical analyzing relations between this category, other companies and private developers and also their input in the renewable energy projects market in the UK.

Based on the image above may be a conclusion that the private developers have absolutely insignificant influence in the renewable energy projects market in the UK in project amount and project capacity meaning. And more than 75% of those projects are solar photovoltaics and wind onshore. Another important conclusion is that 50% of total projects in the market (amount and capacity) belong to “start up” companies and ¾ of those projects are solar photovoltaics, wind onshore and batteries.

In this article, I tried to find the most significant parameters which should be taken into account at the earliest stages of a renewable energy project according to open data provided by the UK government.

The findings here are observational, not the result of a formal study.
