Tanked

“Is it hot?” Barry asked.

Many years ago my friend Barry and I were working on an antique Harley-Davidson gas tank using an acetylene torch to heat the steel glowing red so that we could more easily work out the dents without drilling any holes or using any body filler per the customer’s request.

Barry could do miracles when it came to working with metal, and I learned a lot from working with him.

We had finished working on the tank and stepped away from it just long enough for the red glow to disappear when the boss’s son walked in, said, “What’s this?” and picked up the super-heated gas tank quickly dropping it to the concrete floor. “Is it hot?” Barry asked.

“Naw,” the boss’s son replied staring at the skin burned off of every finger on both hands, “it just doesn’t take me long to look at a gas tank.”

He left to get medical attention and we repaired the tank… Again.
