Auld Lang Syne

An ode to friendship

A song that no one understands, but most of us probably get. Auld Lang Syne begins with a clear rhetorical question on forgetting old acquaintances. Then, onto the time and distance between friends and sharing a drink for auld lang syne — or old time’s sake (the loose translation).

Google it and you’ll find different versions, lyrics, and interpretations, but ultimately this is the meaning I pieced together and the one I like. I’m all for thinking fondly of my friends, no matter the time or distance away from each other.

And, of course, getting together for a drink — beer, coffee, or otherwise — when the opportunity arises.

Because friends are special — they’re people we can celebrate and celebrate with. Not just on New Year’s as we sloppily sing this drunken song together, but every day, even when we’re apart.

They’re the people that no matter how much time we put in between visits, we can easily pick up where we left off.

And Auld Lang Syne is an excellent reminder not to let that go too long.

In fact, I think getting more time in with our friends is a perfect resolution.
