Key Reasons Why Digital Marketing is a MUST for every Small Business

My Partner and I have been running a logistics business in the United Kingdom for the past five years. Simply put, our job is finding and connecting clients that need drivers to help deliver goods, usually when there is a shortage of drivers, to drivers seeking more delivery work. Due to the nature of our business, we often spent time going directly to delivery depots and speaking one on one to potential clients while relying heavily on our marketers converting those potential clients into paying customers.

Like many startups, we had little funds at the beginning and decided to prioritise things like basic operations, staff, sales teams and recruiters, which truthfully were the core of our business. Other than creating a business logo, website and a Facebook page that rarely had content, we spent nothing else on branding and leveraging technology.

Being a B2B business that only needed to have a handful of clients and mostly had to complete deals usually during one-on-one meetings, we never really saw the benefit of taking social media as seriously as we should have.

It came a time when we needed more clients to scale our small business from London into other counties in the United Kingdom; then we started to realise the effect of not having a strong brand identity. Despite our success with our London customers, we had potential clients telling us “ We have never heard or seen anything about your business in the media, how are we sure you can deliver”. Their responses stroke a cord in the minds of partner and me that we decided to take action straight away.

We decided to improve our brand identity by creating primary social media accounts and making an effort to promote them to attract delivery drivers that we could contract out as well as potential customers that for brand awareness. Our efforts, however, was not achieving the objective, which was to grow our brand identity. We were not getting enough followers or likes on our social media pages and was wondering what we were doing wrong.

How did we solve this problem you might wonder? Out of curiosity and frustration, we decided to research ways to improve our digital presence. Through simple google searches, and watching a variety of videos on YouTube on how to start email marketing, also how social marketing worked et al., we began to see that there was a lot to understand which we simply had no clue.
