14 awesome free image resources

Stock images are expensive! I remember how we once bought an image from a large stock site. Price tag, 100 of our hard earned dollars.

That really hurt our budget back then, but “to convey a professional image of your business, you have to sacrifice a bit”, right?. Still, 100 dollars for a single image— sure, the photographer needed food in the table too, but so did we.

And you can buy a lot of oatmeal’s for that amount of money, I tell you.

Anyways, nowadays that’s about to change. Not the fact about the oatmeals, but the stock image prices.

While you cannot overestimate the value of the perfect image, sometimes you just need something to fill out the gap on your website. Or maybe you want to play around with an idea for new poster. Want to pay a hundred dollars for that? — nah, didn’t think so, and neither do I.

Lucky for us designers, there is a movement in motion that is spreading free, high res, high quality, images all across the web. Good or bad for the stock sites or the photographers? – that a topic for another time. Right now, let’s focus on how it benefits your growing business.

Before we look at the links, let me just address the fact that I think you should always credit the original author of the images you use. If you can’t, then a quick thank-you message to the author, is always appreciated by the creators.

They have over 40,000 images, growing with 3,000 images per month. As a bonus, they have free videos available too. Pretty sweet if you ask me.

They pay their bills by showing small, almost non-existing ads in your search results.

You will find more than 40,000 crisp and beautiful stock photos in this database. The authors from Snappa.com made this and insists that “it’s not your typical cra#$!y stock photo site” — but you be the judge of that.

A great collection of old photos, shot long before anyone first thought about “writing a blog-post about this topic”.

Their servers are being paid from their small ads on their pages, so they are able to stay down in the old archives, dusting off even more old photos for you to use — I say thats a pretty sweet deal.

Darias coffee is paid by Google Ads on her website.

They make their money on being Shopify.

All money from their small ads, goes directly into their shared coffee-box. But I’m sure they use some of it for cakes as well.

Kamil and Paweł makes their money with a bit of good ol’ banner ads too.

For the times where no coffee is sent to him, it gets paid by small ads on his site.

Viktor Hanacek made this great collection of more than 1,500 photos. All photos are provided with exif data (technical stuff for photographers).

Allows you to search by colors, which is a cool feature when you need a photo in a specific color scheme. Rudy and Peter made this collection that currently holds more than 2600 photos.

Rudy and Peter’s servers are held alive by a few ads they placed on their website.
