Bouogie Article of The Year

My wife found a wonderfully ridiculous CityLab article about a pop-up museum in Oakland we visited last year. It essentially makes the point that “the Capitalism Museum is a Bit Capitalist.”

“The Museum of Capitalism could easily be called the Museum Against Capitalism. Perhaps fittingly, the museum can’t escape certain contradictions of its own enterprise, starting with its partnership with the Jack London Improvement District. The local economic development organization is the fiscal sponsor for the inaugural temporary installation.” (citylab.com) …because…donating…money…is…*cough*…Capitalist(!?!?)…right guys?…

Immediately the comic on the left popped into my head. As someone who has sold clean energy to homeowners successfully via an internal combustion engine, I still remember one lady who refused to go solar and then tongue in cheeck-ly asked me if I was driving an electric car. Without escalating, I fought the urge to inform her that no, the electric car was killed by GM executives in the 1990s so I’ve been relegated to driving a dirty-energy company-branded vehicle like the rest of ye serfs, in an attempt to literally play within the set-up artificial rules of capitalism to have affordable corporate capital so that the company can have more than a snowball’s chance in hell of ever making a profit for investors. There’s no way to get fed and pay the property taxes without participating in “capitalism” in some way, but that’s not an effective shield against answering for your decisions.

“Capitalism” itself is a word literally coined by Karl Marx, the inventor of the idea of Communism. Marx worked against Capitalism for his entire life, and so using his language at all is extremely anti-Capitalist. People who are in it just call it “the free market,” “business liberty,” or something similar.

The guy even criticizes the gift shop as capitalist, which I’d argue is ignorant, since monetary transactions also occur in socialist systems in Nordic countries, one can’t claim that trading paper money for goods or services is exclusively capitalist. This reminds me of the Twitter pile-on I once witnessed when some similar snarky mayo afficionado Tweeted a picture of Bernie Sanders buying a coffee some morning at a Café in Baltimore, saying roughly the same thing.

Whether you call this boujee, bougie, or the cursive bloviations of the bourgoisie, it definitely sounds like this kid writing the article is a barking lap-dog from the second-story porch of the establishment at passers-by on the street.
