Why is too much carbon dioxide a bad thing?

Sonia I Seneviratne

It is often said that if we don’t do something to prevent climate change, then we will undergo detrimental effects throughout the entire globe. Just like that, pollution could result in a world that is unsustainable for humans to live in. To prove this statement, many provide scientific evidence that has been collected overtime to take a look at the factors contributing to climate change. The main question that I had about climate change is why is climate change so prevalent in today’s society?

According to a book written on the discovering effects on climate change titled, Climate Change and Society, author John Urry states that, “There are raised levels of ‘greenhouse gases’ in the atmosphere results from data collected from a measuring station established on the Mauna Loa volcano on Hawaii in 1959 to monitor CO2 and other emissions in the atmosphere. These readings showed that CO2 was not being fully absorbed into the oceans and was inexorably rising. This may be the most widely reprinted set of natural science data ever collected.” (Urry 46).

The problem with CO2 not being fully absorbed in the ocean is that there is no other place that the CO2 could go besides trees and our atmosphere. He goes on further to talk about the risk of having too much carbon dioxide emissions within our atmosphere. Statistics and studies show that these emissions are leading to increasing temperatures not just on our lands, but in our oceans as well. If this problem keeps persisting at a constant or increased rate, life may change as we know it.

The author concludes that humans are the main reason why climate change is occurring on our planet and urges people to behave differently. He also claims that it’s important to recognize what we need to do to save the planet, starting with the amount of carbon dioxide we emit on a daily basis.

Another article titled, Accelerated dryland expansion under climate change, by author Jianping Huang states that, “Warming and drying trends occur in the historical period, and both are projected to persist into the future. Thus, these two factors may be linked through dynamics and climate. The warming may aggravate the dryland expansion by causing a higher vapour pressure deficit and evaporative demand…” (Huang 5).

He explains that we may not be able to avoid the record breaking temperatures that are coming our way due to trends that are predicted from observations seen overtime. Not only that, but he explains that due to dryland expansion, we would lose many species due to their lack of survival in humid climates. This doesn’t just cause dry land, but it causes infertile soil, influence on temperature extremes, and longer drought periods.

The author goes on discussing more statistical evidence that shows the rate at which the temperature would increase overtime due to carbon emissions. He states that plants would have a more difficult time undergoing photosynthesis due to the lack of fertile soil and abundance of carbon dioxide.

Both of the authors take their side on the argument of climate change. For the most part, both of them readily agree that one of the main problems of climate change is due to the amount of carbon that is being released into the atmosphere. If common sense seems to dictate that carbon emissions are the cause of climate change, then why isn’t the government doing anything about it?
