What Is an Old Soul? Part 1.

If you have been following my meteoric rise to the top of Medium fame and fortune, (I started a week ago) you will see that I have written some posts as though it was my diary, but many more that are academic-like and focus on my preferred topics of talent development, creativity, motivation, and mindfulness. While I am very interested in the science behind human growth and potential- neuroscience, psychology, pedagogy, etc. I am also as interested in the spiritual side of life greatly. As a creative person who feels the flow of insights and inspiration keenly at times, I can’t help but imagine a whole hidden world that exists outside of the realm of (some) my senses.

A part of me has resisted writing about these topics because of a fear of isolating readers or offending someone. Or perhaps I was worried that bringing in anything spiritual, mystical, or religious would delegitimize my formal education rooted in scientific study? Whatever the reason, we don’t get into art to cater to other’s sensitivities. That would be a fool's errand of the highest magnitude. Creatives are creative to express the fullest recognition of themselves. This includes knowledge and wisdom.

I am both scientific and deeply spiritual. I have meditated for thousands of hours, yes thousands. I was once part of an organization that could be classified as a cult. That is dedication. I meditate, do yoga, say affirmations, visualize, attempt to focus my energy, get in touch with my higher-self, and all the rest. I know when to make decisions based on my science mind, and when to let go and have a little trust in the inner world. I have come to the conclusion that I am what mystical people call an old soul.

Before you believe you are an old soul, you have to believe in the idea of souls. Even then, using language to try and explain the definitions of our conceptualizations of these things can lead to miscommunication. Think about what it means to be happy. Would you know how to explain that to someone in a way you were absolutely sure they understood it the same way you did?

I want to dive into what it means when someone describes themselves as an old soul. From there I want to explore how that shapes who we are and how we feel about the world. Until the next time!
