Browser Wars

The concept of Browser Wars has been foreign to me until now. I did not realize that the space on the Internet could be so competitive, although after reading this article, it does make sense. The Internet has become a booming market over the last decade. Being in the creative field, it can be an intimidating place on the Internet. I say this because it is so vast, there are so many tools that can “up” your status as a creative professional, and the amount of traffic that can stumble upon your domain from all over the world is mind-blowing. I can only imagine the scale that all of those factors are at when it comes to actual Internet Browsers. I recall using Internet Explorer for the longest time throughout my life. It was on my family’s Dell desktop at home growing up, and on every school owned computer as I learned the basics of a computer and the internet, during grade school. It wasn’t till I owned a Mac that I noticed it disappear. I became an avid user of Safari. Apple took over in Internet Browsers for so long because of the immediacy of their own apps being built in and ready for use on their devices. More recently in the last few years, I started using Google Chrome. I’m not sure the exact reason why, but I believe it had to do with the plug-ins I was using that were incompatible with Safari. Since then, I only use Google Chrome and have found that many people I know use it as well. Another browser that I find popular especially because of the built in Firewall against viruses is FireFox. This browser was a lot earlier than Chrome, according to the article, coming out in the early 2000s. I still see it being used today, although not as popular as I recall it being about three years ago. It’s amazing to read the history behind these browser wars, and to realize that at the time I was a product of these wars, switching from Safari to Chrome, obliviously unaware of the fight they were having for my, along with millions of other users, loyalty.
