Ennui

Conversation fell into a lull
I stared at the ceiling as you pressed your lips onto mine
And mechanically,
I kissed you back.
 
Apathy filled my bones as you undressed me,
Mind as blank as the wall behind us
Aching, knowing
That my eyes didn’t hold the same love for you,
As yours did for me

My hands are not my own,
As they stroke your hair
Neither is my tongue when it says
I love you, too
Easier, I believed, it was to feign,
Than to break your heart.

Darling
I wrote this poem long before I left
I wrote this poem lying next to you in bed
I wrote this poem after I realized I had no love left to give.
